About 500 girls gathered on the LSU Baton Rouge campus Sept. 22 for the 2012 Sally Ride Festival. The festival is held annually to honor the first American woman astronaut in outer space, Sally Ride, and to encourage girls to pursue careers in science.

In this exercise, one student operates the lungs while the other student produces particulate air pollution by squeezing the cup, which represents an incinerator. At the end of the exercise, the students removed the smaller balloon from the soda bottle and, then, cut it open to see what was inside from "breathing" smoke from the incinerator.
