Participants in a workshop

given by the LSU Superfund

Research Center during the

2012 Sally Ride Festival learn

how the lungs work by using a

soda bottle, which represents

the chest cavity, and a balloon,

which represents the lungs.

A larger balloon attached to the

bottom of the soda bottle

represents the diaphragm .

In this exercise, one student

operates the lungs while the

other student produces

particulate air pollution by

squeezing the cup, which

represents an incinerator.

At the end of the exercise,

the students removed the

smaller balloon from the soda

bottle and, then, cut it open to

see what was inside from

"breathing" smoke from the

incinerator.
