In addition to industrial sources, many hazardous materials may be present in your own home. Aerosol cans, cleaners, bleach, used oils, paint, batteries, fluorescent tubes, TVs, tires and propane tanks are just a few common examples. When it comes time to dispose of these, it’s important to remember that they shouldn’t be thrown away or poured down the drain. The city of Baton Rouge hosts bi-annual hazardous waste collection days, and some of these wastes can even be handled for free year-round through local businesses. City collection days usually occur in March and October in the Memorial Stadium Parking Lot.
