Targeted Brownfields Assessment Program

The non-profit Volunteers of America was offered a vacant church building in Shreveport, Louisiana, to provide services such as adult and child day care services, meals for the elderly and child tutoring.  But the property had environmental problems such as asbestos and lead paint.

To address these issues, the Volunteers of America turned to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Targeted Brownfields Assessment Program.   This program offers free evaluations including sampling and analyses, cleanup planning based on proposed reuse, cleanup cost estimates and other technical reports.

With this information, the Volunteers of America partnered with Shreveport and received a Brownfields grant to clean up asbestos and lead paint in the facility.

The Highland neighborhood in Shreveport is now served by this facility benefitting at-risk youth, the elderly, homeless and disabled individuals.

This program is provided to communities in all of the five states in Region 6 (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas).
